About Me

I always thought that I knew how to be financial responsible and make wise decisions. Apparently I don’t. I realized this when I was flying back home from Christmas vacation in January 2010. I decided that this was the year I would really, really crack down on my finances and accomplish something. During the 5 hour flight, I wrote down goals for the year and for each month. Some of the goals were very simple ones, like find a new place to live for $1000 when I was already planning on moving at the end of January, while others were more of a stretch, like learn French and Spanish. I also had goals of paying off at least two credit cards and saving $4000 in an emergency fund. After I got my goals down on paper, I began to figure out how to accomplish them and what I needed in terms of time, money, and training to accomplish them.

I started with paying off the credit cards, so I listed all of my debts including credit cards, student loans, and car loans. This is when I realized how bad of a situation I was in. I had over $106,000 in debt and a huge chunk of that was my credit card debt! Needless to say, I was not too thrilled about how crappy I had been with my finances over the past 5 years. By the time I got off the plane, I had formulated a plan on how to accomplish my goals and still pay off my debt. It was not going to be easy nor accomplished in a year, but I was determined to do it.

This blog was created to show what I have done to get out of debt and the experiences I have had along the way. I wanted a place to keep a record so that when I accomplish my goals I can show others what it took for me to get there.  A lot of the posts here will have a personal finance twist to them but many of them will be about things relevant to my life.  I hope that my story might help someone else with their financial situation.

I am 28 and living outside of San Francisco, CA. I love the outdoors and almost anything to do with the water, as I actively sail on the San Francisco Bay. I am an avid learner and reader. I like to cook, build or create new things, read, go hiking/camping, watch movies, and play video games.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog, and come back often for updates!
